How many pairs of chromosomes does a mouse have?

Mice have 20 chromosomes in their haploid genome (thus 40 chromosomes). The haploid genome is about 3 picograms, which is similar to that of humans. The order of the genes of the genomes of mice and humans is preserved, although there are permutations, one per chromosome. Unlike the predominantly metacentric chromosomes of humans, all murine chromosomes are acrocentric. The mouse is a popular model system because it is a mammal with complex genetic tools and significant genetic resources.
