How many years did the Byzantine Empire last?

Byzantium, aka the Eastern Roman Empire, is a state formed in 395 AD due to the split of the Roman Empire into the Eastern and Western parts. The Western Roman Empire did not last even 100 years after the collapse. And Byzantium ceased to exist only in 1453 AD after the capture of the city of Constantinople, the capital of Byzantium, by the Ottoman Turks.
