How much damage did Italy suffer from the First World War?

Italy entered World War I not in 1914, like most European countries, but in May 1915, when the Entente promised her more than Germany and Austria-Hungary. The Italian army was rather weak, they even lost the campaign in Ethiopia in 1896. Consequently, most of the war in their theater of operations was positional and unproductive. In the fall of 1917, the Italians suffered a heavy defeat at Caporetto.

As a result of the war, Italy slightly expanded its territories in Europe at the expense of Austria-Hungary.

The main damage was inflicted on the economy of the north-east of the country and people. During the period from May 1915 to November 1918 Italy lost 2 million people killed, wounded, sick and prisoners.
