How to determine the oxidation state?

The oxidation state is the formal charge of an atom, it is also called the oxidation number. It is a value that indicates the oxidation state of an individual atom. In fact, this is just a convenient method for accounting for electron transport. Basic rules for finding a degree:
1. The oxidation state in a simple substance (a substance consisting of one type of atoms) is 0.
2. In complex compounds, some atoms exhibit only one oxidation state – constant oxidation states. But the atoms of some elements can have several oxidation states.
