Let’s rewrite the equation of the function in a more familiar form:

y = 2x – 3.

Since the function is linear, it will increase (or decrease) on the entire set of definition, so it is enough to find the value of the function at the ends of the segment.

y1 = 2 * (- 1) – 3 = -5

y2 = 2 * 2 – 3 = 1.

Answer: the highest value is 1, the lowest is -5.
