How to get an alkene from an alkane?

The most common method for obtaining alkenes from alkanes is halogenation-dehydrohalogenation.

The first step is usually the radical halogenation of alkanes.

(CH3) 3C-H + Br2hνm → (CH3) 3C-Br + H-Br.

The alkyl halide is then dehydrohalogenated by reacting with a strong base.

(CH3) 3C-Br + KOH ethanol → (CH3) 2C = CH2 + KBr + H2O.
