For medieval people, the church was the basis of their life and worldview. In simple words, the church is everything for a medieval citizen. This is the power, this is the protector, and everything, everything, everything. Of course, not all medieval people blindly worshiped church dogmas. There were many heresies (teachings different from the orthodox laws of the church), which were directed not so much against the church as against its influence and its dogmas, which often went beyond some moral framework.
