In feudal society, the principle “my vassal’s vassal is not my vassal” became very widespread.
Actually, the independence of the German princes from the emperor was based on it. The prince had complete power over his land, and the emperor simply said when he needed to pay and when to go on a military campaign (if some kind of dangerous situation for the country happened).
On their lands, the princes could independently establish laws and administer courts, the collection of taxes and duties was also assigned to them. And most importantly, the princes could independently build cities and issue their own currency in them.
