How was the influence of the ancient heritage on the history and culture of Byzantium expressed?

Although Byzantium rejected paganism, it was the direct successor of everything that remained of the ancient world. First of all, this applies to the Greek language, education system, literature and science. A striking example of the succession of cultures is the scientific work of the Byzantine writer, Procopius of Caesarea, dedicated to the wars of Justinian with the Goths, Persians and Vandals. The Byzantines built magnificent temples with unique paintings. This was a continuation and consequence of the knowledge, skill and experience accumulated in ancient culture. Also common are the traditions of entertainment and decoration of cities, in particular theaters and hippodromes.
