How was the relationship between the Spartans and the Helots built?

Helots were called a segment of the population that was actually in a slave position. Helots were attached to a certain family, whose members bore noble names, were representatives of the upper classes. The helots worked for them. The peculiarity was that the helots had to give only a fixed part of their harvest to the owners, no one else could demand from them. This made them not as vulnerable as, for example, slaves.
