How were medieval cities protected?

Very often, medieval cities were fortified with fortress walls. Thus, they often resembled fortified fortresses. This was done so that, in case of war, people who live inside and outside the city could defend themselves from the attack of enemy troops. In addition, the walls of the cities did not allow the enemy to immediately break into the city and wreak havoc there.
