How were people depicted on Byzantine mosaics, frescoes and icons?
Man was in the center of attention of the Christian worldview, the human figure was the bearer of the main artistic ideas. The most significant figures in the composition (Christ, Mother of God, saints) were usually depicted in a frontal position. The figures surrounding them were located in more free poses (most often in a three-quarter spread), which emphasized the special importance and hierarchy of the central figures. In profile, as a rule, negative characters (Judas, Satan) were depicted, and occasionally minor characters. The center of many images was usually the head (or halo) of the main figure, regardless of its size. The circle of the halo defined the center of gravity of the icon. Therefore, in it, the figures usually do not stand on the ground, but, as it were, float, which creates the illusion of their immateriality.
