During this time, France held a more independent position. At first, she joined NATO, but at the same time she tried to sort out her colonial problems alone. Then, in the second term of Charles de Gaulle, she leaves the NATO military bloc and improves her relations with the USSR. However, already at the beginning of the 90s, France returned to NATO. At the same time, its troops remain on the sidelines in most military conflicts of that period, in contrast to the same England. One of the exceptions was the operation in Libya.
