If all bacteria and molds disappeared, the planet would be covered with a thick layer of dead vegetation. Explain the reason for this phenomenon.

Without bacteria and fungi, the planet would be covered with a layer of dead vegetation, because these organisms are decomposers (or destructors). These are organisms that feed on the dead remains of all living things, they break down organic matter into its constituent parts (mineral salts and water), thereby enabling autotrophic organisms or producers to use them anew and synthesize organic matter. Thus, decomposers perform an important function, closing the biotic cycle in nature.
