In a conductor with a resistance of 2 ohms, the current strength is 20 A. What amount of heat will be released in the conductor in 1 min?
In order to find how much heat is released in a conductor when an electric current passes through it, it is necessary to apply the Lenz-Joule law, according to which it is directly proportional to the square of the current, the resistance of the conductor and the time of current flow through this conductor:
Q = I² x R x t,
where Q is the amount of heat that the electric current emits (measured in joules – J),
I is the current that flows through the conductor (A),
R is the resistance of the conductor (Ohm), t is the time during which the current flowed through the conductor (seconds).
Then, according to the conditions of the problem I = 20 A, R = 2 Ohm, t = 60 s (1 minute = 60 seconds),
Q = 20² x 2 x 60 = 400 x 2 x 60 = 48000 J or 48 kJ.
Answer: 48 kJ.
