| Let ABC be a given right-angled triangle (∠C = 90 °).
By the Pythagorean theorem AB ^ 2 = AC ^ 2 + CB ^ 2.
AB ^ 2 = 12 ^ 2 + 5 ^ 2 = 144 + 25 = 169 = 132.
AB = 13.
S = ½ CB * CA = ½ * 12 * 5 = 30.
Answer: the hypotenuse of triangle 13, area 30.
