In the first half of the day, the temperature changed by -4 degrees, and in the second by + 12 degrees. How many degrees has the temperature changed during the day?

Let’s denote by x the temperature that was at the beginning of the day.

According to the condition of the problem, in the first half of the day the temperature changed by -4 degrees, therefore, in the first half of the day the temperature was x – 4 degrees.

Also in the condition of the problem it is said that in the afternoon the temperature rose by 12 degrees, therefore, in the afternoon the temperature was x – 4 + 12 = x + 8 degrees.

Consequently, during the day the temperature rose by x + 8 – x = 8 degrees.

Answer: the temperature rose by 8 degrees during the day.
