Calcium and magnesium oxides are basic oxides. They can be distinguished when dissolved in water.

a) Add water to the test tube with calcium oxide and observe the formation of a turbid precipitate – calcium hydroxide.

b) We also add water to the test tube with magnesium oxide, no dissolution is observed. Alkaline earth metal oxides, whose hydroxides are insoluble in water, do not dissolve in water.
