In what century and how did the state of England arise? And why was it called that?

At the time of the gathering of the English lands by the Anglo-Saxon kings and their struggle with the harsh Normans and Celtic kingdoms, the British island was inhabited by many tribes, and consisted of many small kingdoms and territories. The founder of the Kingdom of England is officially considered the grandson of Alfred the Great – thelstan. Many kings of the Scottish kingdoms and from South Wales swore allegiance to him in 927. And in 928 he conquered all of Wales, forcing his king to swear allegiance and pay tribute. This date is considered the beginning of the Kingdom of England.
