In what ways did medieval monks provide themselves?

Medieval monks supported themselves by farming and selling indulgences.

Some monasteries had their own lands, on which the monks themselves worked. They grew cultivated plants, grapes, sold them, ate agricultural products. Some monasteries had serfs who cultivated the land and reaped the harvest. There were also beggarly monks who lived off alms.

The sale of indulgences – brought a good income to the pope’s treasury and to the pockets of the monks themselves.
