There were two wars between the Greeks and the Persians.

The first war began in 492 BC.

The Greeks helped the cities of Ionia who had rebelled against the Persians by sending them military troops. The Persians managed to suppress the uprising and decided to take revenge on the Greeks. They managed to capture Eretria, to force Thrace and Macedonia into an alliance. After the successes, the Persians moved to Athens.

The famous Marathon battle took place, which brought victory to the Greeks. Later, the Persians had to suppress the rebellion in Egypt. After this uprising, the Persian king Xerxes began to prepare for a second campaign.
