Pope Urban II called for a crusade against Muslims in the Middle East and recapture Jerusalem. In the Italian city of Piacenza in March, after the reception, the Pope began to consider the form of the campaign. In November, at the Clermont Cathedral, Urban II delivered his famous speech, to which enthusiastic crowds exclaimed, “This is what God wants.” The red cross sewn on the participants of the campaign gave the name to the people – “crusaders”. It was the first in a series of crusades to the Holy Land, which ended in retreat in 1271.
