The first universities appeared in Europe in the second millennium of our era. I will list them by country:
Spain – University of Bologna (1088) University of Salamanca (1218); University of Padua (1222).
England – University of Oxford (1096); Cambridge – (1209);
France – Sorbonne (1216).
