In which parts of the range do newts fall into winter torpor in September, and in which October? What factor limits the spread of the newt in Eastern Siberia and the Russian Far East?

The newt is a tailed amphibian, a relative of frogs and toads. Newts are cold-blooded, so they are demanding on the ambient temperature, as well as on humidity, like all amphibians. Consequently, it is these factors that limit the distribution of newts in these regions.

Winter numbness occurs when the ambient temperature drops steadily and the animal hibernates until it becomes warm again. Accordingly, the further north the part of the range, the earlier the winter numbness begins (in September), in the more southern part of the range – later (in October).

Newts disappeared from several regions of Ukraine due to environmental pollution and destruction of their habitat.
