Indicate the external, and most importantly, internal reasons for the surge of nationalism in China and Japan at the beginning of the 20th century.
The main reason can be considered belated modernization, that is, the transformation of the backward and isolated states of East Asia into industrial ones similar to those in Europe. In this sense, Japan was lucky under Emperor Mutsuhito (1868-1912), since 1889 even a constitution with a parliament appeared.
In China (the Qing Empire) there were two problems: modernization (for example, the first university in Beijing was opened in 1898) and the overthrow of the Qing dynasty, which was not Chinese in origin, but Manchu. This happened in 1911, when the young emperor Pu Yi was overthrown by the Xinhai Revolution.
