This was Athens. In 490 BC, the Greek army attacked the Persian forces that were landing near Marathon. The battle also took place there. Thanks to a swift attack, the Greeks managed to defeat the Persian troops and throw them back into the sea. This was the first great victory of Athens in this war. In this connection, other poleis began to adjoin Athens in order to organize a common struggle against a powerful conqueror – the Persian Empire.
