Is it possible to consider a balloon as a material point when determining the Archimedean force acting on a balloon in the air.

For a balloon, the Archimedes force FА = ρVg,

where – ρ is the density of air,

V is the volume of the sphere,

g is the acceleration of gravity.

If the ball is considered a material point, then the volume V = 0, and the calculated buoyancy (lift) force is also zero. In reality, however, the volume and density of the gas filling the ball determine its ability to aeronautics.

Answer: A balloon cannot be considered a material point.
