Is there a base for the development of industry and agriculture in the European North?
The region in question is 3 oblasts (as part of the Arkhangelsk region, too) and two republics in the north of the European part of the country.
There is a base, but agriculture is poorly developed due to the climate, expensive labor force, its shortage, the predominance of the urban population, the low population density in general, and the regional specialization in the extraction of minerals (peat, coal, oil, metal) and the timber industry.
Priority areas: reindeer husbandry (Nenets Autonomous Okrug, Murmansk region), hunting, fishing (the region is rich in sea and river fish). Greenhouse facilities near large cities (Murmansk, Arkhangelsk), dairy farming (most developed in the Vologda region), plant growing (potatoes, berries, barley, flax grow well).
Examples of agricultural development in northern conditions – Finland.
