Isomerism types of alcohols.

Alcohols exhibit the following three types of isomerism: chain isomerism, positional isomerism, and functional isomerism.

Chain isomerism. Alcohols containing at least 4-carbon atoms form chain isomerism due to the different structure of the C-skeleton in the longest chain.

Isomerism of the state. Alcohols containing at least 3 carbon atoms form position isomerism due to the different position of the hydroxy group (OH).

Functional isomerism. Alcohols containing at least 2 carbon atoms give functional isomers. The functional isomer of alcohol is ether.
