Let d be the distance from the center of a circle with a radius R to a straight line L.

Let d be the distance from the center of a circle with a radius R to a straight line L. What is the relative position of a straight line L and a circle if: R = 10 cm, d = 8.4 cm?

Given: A circle with center O and radius R;
d – distance from O to straight line L;
R = 10 centimeters;
d = 8.4 centimeters;
What is the location of the straight line L and the circle -?
Solution:
1) Since d is the distance from O to the straight line L, then d is perpendicular to L;
2) Since d = 8.4 centimeters, and R = 10 centimeters, that is, R> d (10 centimeters> 8.4 centimeters), then the line L will intersect our circle.
