The human alimentary canal is a hollow tube about ten meters long. It includes the following sections: the oral cavity, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small intestine and large intestine. The channel wall is three-layered and consists of: inner, middle and outer layers. The inner layer is represented by the mucosa and submucosa. The digestive glands and blood vessels are located under the mucous membrane. The middle layer is smooth muscle, which contracts and promotes the movement of food and feces in the alimentary canal. The outer layer is called the serous membrane of the digestive tract.
