List the organs of the food system in order.

Mouth. The mouth is the beginning of the digestive tract; and, in fact, digestion starts here when the first bite of food occurs.

Esophagus. Located in the throat next to the trachea (tube), the esophagus receives food from the mouth when you swallow.

Stomach. The stomach is a hollow organ or “container” that contains food when mixed with enzymes that continue the process of breaking down food in a usable form.

Small intestine. Of the three segments – the duodenum, the jejunum, and the ileum – the small intestine is a muscular tube that breaks down food using enzymes.

Pancreas. The pancreas secretes digestive enzymes into the duodenum, the first segment of the small intestine.

Liver. The liver has several functions, but its main function in the digestive system is to process nutrients absorbed from the small intestine.

The gallbladder. The gallbladder stores and concentrates bile and then releases it into the duodenum to help absorb and digest fat.

Colon. The large intestine is a long muscular tube that connects the small intestine to the rectum.

Rectum. The rectum is the chamber that connects the colon to the anus.

Anus. The anus is the last part of the digestive tract.
