List the properties that are characteristic of calcium oxide.

Calcium oxide is an odorless granular powder, from white to yellow, gray or brown. Its density is 3.34 g ml -1. Melting and boiling points are 2613º C and 3850º C, respectively. It is soluble in water, reacting to form calcium hydroxide. Calcium oxide is insoluble in methanol and ethyl ether.

Calcium oxide has a high chemical reactivity. Calcium oxide is used to obtain building material because a mixture with water can react to form calcium hydroxide, which quickly forms a hardened material:

CaO + H 2 O → Ca (OH) 2.

It can also react with fossil sources to produce calcium carbide:

2 CaO (s) + 5 C (s) → 2 CaC 2 (s) + CO 2 (g).
