Binary compounds are complex substances whose molecules consist of atoms of only two chemical elements.
Carbon is denoted by the symbol – C. It can form many binary compounds.
Inorganic substances.
– CO – carbon monoxide (2) or carbon monoxide
– CO2 – carbon monoxide (4) or carbon dioxide
– CaC2 – calcium carbide
Organic matter – all hydrocarbons (valency C is always 4)
– alkanes, for example methane – CH4
– alkenes, for example ethylene – C2H4
– alkynes, for example acetylene – C2H2
