3) Nitrogen (II) oxide is oxidized to nitrogen (IV) oxide:

4) Nitrogen (IV) oxide reacts with oxygen and water to produce concentrated nitric acid:
4NO2 + O2 + 2H2O (horizontal) → 4HNO3 (conc.).
