Methods for obtaining zinc.

1. Industrial methods:
ZnS + 3O2 = 2ZnO + 2SO2 – redox reaction, roasting of zinc blende mineral, zinc oxide is obtained;
ZnO + C = Zn + CO – reduction, pyrometallurgical process occurs at 1250 degrees;
ZnO + H2SO4 = ZnSO4 + H2O – exchange reaction, hydrometallurgical process leads to the formation of zinc sulfate;
2ZnSO4 + 2H2O = 2Zn + O2 + 2H2SO4 – ‘electrolysis of an aqueous solution of zinc sulfate, zinc is released at the cathode.
2. Laboratory methods:
ZnSO4 + Mg = Zn + MgSO4 – substitution reaction, zinc was obtained;
3ZnO + 2Al = 3Zn + Al2O3 – OBP, zinc was formed (method of aluminothermy).
Zinc can be obtained from the ZnS-zinc blende mineral. Zinc is used as an anti-corrosion coating for steel and in the manufacture of battery plates.
