Many members of the animal kingdom are parasites. Parasites live off their host. Without a host, the parasites die. One of the most common animal parasites among humans are helminths. These are parasitic worms. Most people are infected with them. Some types of worms do not affect the health of the host. But there are species that release very toxic waste products that poison the body. Also, helminths can get into other human organs, not just the digestive ones.
