Occupations of the population of Byzantium.
Byzantium existed from 395 to 1453, this is the period of the Middle Ages, therefore, the main occupation of its inhabitants was agriculture and peasant labor in the Balkans and on the peninsula of Asia Minor. They grew cereals, vegetables, fruits and grapes, raised livestock.
Part of the population lived in cities, and they exceeded the cities of Western Europe in terms of development in the VI-XI centuries. In the cities it was possible to engage in construction, for example, in Constantinople, 5 kilometers long walls were built in the 5th century, and in the 6th century, the Sophia Cathedral was erected.
The Byzantines also traded and fought. A resident of the empire could serve in the infantry and cavalry and sometimes fight quite far from Constantinople, for example, in the 6th century, even in the south of Spain.
Crafts (processing of stone, leather, metals), philosophy (religious studies), icon painting and shipbuilding were also developed in Byzantium.
