On a segment AB 24 cm long, a point is indicated. M so that the length of the segment AM is 2 cm longer than the segment MB. Find the segment length AM and MB.
Consequently, the MВ segment is 2 cm less than the AM segment.
We calculate the length of the segment AM, denoting it by x. This means that the length of the MВ segment will be equal to x – 2. The sum of the two segments is 24 cm.
Let’s make an equation and solve it.
x + x – 2 = 24.
Move (-2) to the right, at the same time changing its sign to the opposite.
x + x = 24 + 2.
Add x and numbers:
2 x = 26.
We are looking for an unknown factor, according to the rule:
x = 26/2.
x = 13 cm – the length of the segment AM.
Hence, the MВ segment is equal to:
13 cm – 2 cm = 11 cm.
Verification:
13 cm + 11 cm = 24 cm.
Everything is correct.
