On the segment AB 14 cm long, point C is marked, segment AC is 6 cm.

On the segment AB 14 cm long, point C is marked, segment AC is 6 cm. Point D is the middle of segment AC, point E is the middle of segment CB. What is the distance between points D and E?

The points on the line are located in the following sequence: A – D – C – E – B.

DE = DC + CE.

1) Calculate the length of the AC segment: AC = 6, AC = 2 * DC (point D is the middle of the AC segment). Whence 2 * DC = 6, DC = 3.

2) We calculate the length of the segment CE: CE = CB / 2 (point E in the middle of the segment CB), CB = AB – AC, then CE = (AB – AC) / 2.

CE = (14 – 6) / 2 = 8/2 = 4.

DE = DC + CE = 3 + 4 = 7.

Answer: the distance between points D and E is 7 cm.
