| Let’s say the first side of the rectangle is x cm.
Since the second side is 42% larger than the first, it will be: 42% + x = 1.42 * x.
The area of the rectangle is the product of the sides of the figure, so we get the equation:
x + 1.42 * x = 568.
1.42 * x ^ 2 = 568.
x ^ 2 = 568 / 1.42 = 400.
x = √400 = 20 cm (first side of the rectangle).
1.42 * x = 1.42 * 20 = 28.4 cm (second side of the rectangle).
Answer: The smaller side of the rectangle is 20 cm.
