One side of the triangle is exactly 24 cm, and the other 40 cm. Find the third side of the triangle if it is known that it is two times smaller than one of the sides.

Given:

Side 1 – 24 cm;

Side 2 – 40 cm;

Side 3 -? cm is 2 times smaller than one of the sides.

Decision:

Suppose the third side is half the size of the first side. Then the third side will be equal to 24/2 = 12 cm.

According to the rule about the sides of a triangle, neither side can be greater than the sum of the other two.

In this case, the second side of the triangle is larger than the first and third: 40> 24 + 12, which means the third side cannot be half the size of the first.

It turns out that side 3 is equal to half of side 2, that is, 20 cm. In this case, the rule about the sides of the triangle is fulfilled.

Answer: 20 cm.
