In ancient Greece, physical education of children at the state level began at the age of 12. In special schools – palaestrah, boys learned wrestling skills, went in for running, jumping, gymnastics, swimming. A special place was occupied by lessons in throwing a hammer and a spear. The training lasted up to 16 years. These were private schools.

Young men from wealthy families from the age of 16 could continue their further education in gymnasiums.
