Phoenicians lived in the territory of modern Lebanon, their genetic descendants are modern Lebanese. However, some border areas of modern Syria and Israel could also be part of their state. In addition to the main territory in the Middle East, they had numerous colonies on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. The most famous are in Malta and Tunisia (Carthage). Phoenicians were noted in Cyprus, Crete, the northern coast of Libya, Rhodes, Sicily, Sardinia, the southern coast of Spain and the northern coast of Algeria.
