Places of origin of medieval cities.

The main places of origin of medieval cities were territories located near river systems and other bodies of water. Rivers and lake systems were used as vehicles in the Middle Ages. Cities were formed in territories that lay outside the powers of the feudal lords, since the townspeople did not want to pay a double tax in favor of the state and the feudal lord. Thus, they received much more favorable conditions for living and doing handicrafts and farming than villagers and peasants.
