Point C belongs to segment AB; segment AC is 15 cm and segment AB is 5 cm longer than segment AC. What is the length of segment BC? If the condition contains extra data.

Because point C belongs to the segment, then the segment AB has the form: A – C – B.

Method 1) If the segment AB is 5 cm longer than the segment AC (AC = 15 cm), then the length of the segment AB is 15 + 5 = 20 cm.

The segment BC is equal to: AB – AC = 20 – 15 = 5 cm.

Method 2) Because segment AB consists of two segments: AC and BC, then the difference between the sum of the segments (AB) and one of the segments (BC) will be equal to the length of the second segment. Therefore, BC = 5 cm.

Answer: BC = 5 cm. The condition will contain extra data when solving in the second way (AC = 15 cm).
