Let X be the coefficient of proportionality, then AC = 5X, CB = 3X. Since the length of the segment is 12, it is also equal to 8X, then we make the equation:
8X = 12;
X = 12/8;
X = 1.5
Thus, AC = 5 * 1.5 = 7.5; CB = 3 * 1.5 = 4.5
We do the check: 7.5 + 4.5 = 12
Answer: AC = 7.5; CB = 4.5
