Point M divides the CD segment into 2 segments so that the length of one segment is 5 cm longer than the other. Find the lengths of the segments if it is known that the segment CD is 19 cm.

1) Let’s find out how long one of the segments has, if the second is 5 cm longer than the first, and their total length is 19 cm.We make an equation where:

X is the length of the first segment;

X + 5 – the length of the second segment;

19 – the length of the two segments together.

X + X + 5 = 19;

2X = 19 – 5;

2X = 14;

X = 14/2;

X = 7 cm.

2) Let’s find out how long the second segment has, if it is 5 cm longer than the length of the first segment, and the length of the first segment was 7 cm.

7 + 5 = 12 cm.

Answer: the length of the first segment was 7 cm, and the second segment is 12 cm long.
