Points A, B, C are given on the straight line, and AB = 4 cm, AC = 6 cm.Find the length of the segment BC if: a) points B and C lie on the same side of point A: b) point B and C lie along different sides from point A

a) points B and C lie on the same side of point A, points are located in the following sequence: A – B – C.

Then BC = AC – AB, with AB = 4 cm, AC = 6 cm we get:

BC = AC – AB = 6 – 4 = 2 cm.

b) points B and C lie on opposite sides of point A, points are located in the following sequence: B – A – C.

Then BC = AC + AB, with AB = 4 cm, AC = 6 cm we get:

BC = AC + AB = 6 + 4 = 10 cm.
