We place points B, C, and D on a straight line, and there can be two options.

1) B —– C —– D. Here BC = 4.2 cm; CD = 5.1 cm and BD = BC + CD; BD = 4.2 cm + 5.1 cm = 9.3 cm.

2) The second option for the location of points on a straight line can be the one when point D is located on the other side of point C, as shown in the diagram.

D – B —– C. Here СD> ВС by condition, and then modulo (value) | ВD | = | DВ | = СD – ВС = 5.1 cm – 4.2 cm = 0.9 cm.

Answer: 1) 9.3 cm; 2) 0.9 cm.
